Few backyard insects cause as much unnecessary alarm as the cicada killer. At up to two inches long, a female patrolling a lawn in July looks like the most dangerous thing a homeowner has ever seen — and is in practice one of the least. This guide is the overview of the species and the wider family of large solitary hunting wasps it belongs to: how to recognize them, why the burrows appear in your lawn, what the real sting risk is, and what to do (usually nothing).

Cicada killer wasps (Sphecius speciosus) are large solitary wasps that hunt annual cicadas to provision their underground nests. They are among the largest wasps in North America, and they are the species behind most “giant wasp” sightings east of the Rockies.
Quick identification:
The key point that resolves most homeowner anxiety: cicada killers are solitary. Each female digs and provisions her own burrow. There is no colony, no shared nest to defend, and no workers to recruit into an attack. That makes them fundamentally different from yellow jackets, which is the species most people are actually afraid of. Almost every homeowner question about cicada killers is really an identification question. Something large is flying low over the lawn, and the answer to “what do I do about it” depends entirely on which insect it is. This table covers the look-alikes most often confused with cicada killers:

Two field marks do most of the work. First, wing color: cicada killers, tarantula hawks, and scoliid wasps all have tinted wings, while social wasps have clear ones. Second, behavior at the nest: a solitary wasp entering a hole in the ground is going about its own business, whereas a stream of small wasps coming and going from a single opening is a yellow jacket colony and should be treated with real caution. A female digs a burrow — often a foot or more deep with several side chambers — in loose, sandy, sun-exposed soil. She then hunts, paralyzing a cicada with her sting and flying or dragging it back to the burrow. This is why you may see a wasp struggling across a lawn with prey much larger than itself. She lays a single egg on the cicada, seals the chamber, and repeats. The larva feeds on the paralyzed cicada, overwinters underground, and emerges the following summer.
Males emerge first and establish territories over the nesting area. This is the behavior that frightens people most: males hover, chase each other, and will fly directly at a person walking through. It looks like an attack. It is a bluff — male cicada killers have no stinger at all and are physically incapable of stinging. In all stinging wasps and bees, the stinger is a modified egg-laying organ, so only females have one. The aerial “dogfights” between males over a lawn are territorial disputes with each other, not with you.
There is one generation per year. The larva spins a cocoon in its underground cell in late summer, spends the winter as a dormant prepupa, pupates in spring, and emerges as an adult the following summer — which is why the same favorable patch of ground tends to host wasps year after year. Adults themselves do not eat cicadas; they feed on flower nectar and plant sap, and the cicadas are strictly larval food.
A detail that surprises most people: the female controls the sex of each offspring and provisions accordingly. Cells destined to produce females — which are much larger — are stocked with two or three cicadas, while cells producing the smaller males typically get one. A single female may provision a dozen or more cells over her few weeks of adult life.

The burrow is what most homeowners actually notice first, usually before they identify the wasp. A cicada killer entrance is roughly the diameter of a quarter, and the female pushes excavated soil out behind her, leaving a characteristic U-shaped or horseshoe-shaped mound of loose earth around one side of the hole. The tunnel typically descends 6–12 inches at an angle before branching into side chambers, and the total excavation can run several feet in length across ten or more cells.
Females are strongly selective about where they dig. They favor soil that is well-drained, light in texture, sparsely vegetated, and in full sun — which in practice means thin turf, bare slopes, the sandy strip along a patio or sidewalk edge, flower bed margins, golf course bunkers, and south-facing banks. Dense, healthy, well-watered grass is difficult for them to excavate and is usually passed over.
Because good nesting soil is patchy, dozens or even hundreds of females may dig in the same small area. This is an aggregation, not a colony — a crowd of independent neighbours, each defending nothing. It is the single most important distinction in this guide, because an aggregation of a hundred cicada killers is far less dangerous than one yellow jacket nest. Very little. Only females can sting, and their sting is reserved almost exclusively for subduing prey. Females are not nest-defensive in the way social wasps are; they will generally tolerate people working nearby and sting only if physically handled, stepped on barefoot, or trapped against skin. Reported stings are rare, and the venom is mild compared with a yellow jacket’s.

The realistic risk to a household is low enough that tolerance is the recommended default. Some sensible caveats:

Cicada killers also cause no structural damage. They do not chew wood, they do not nest in walls or attics, and they do not reuse or expand a nest the way social wasps do.
In most cases, nothing. Cicada killers are beneficial, they are active for only a few weeks, and the adults die off by early fall. They do not damage structures, they do not chew wood, and they do not sting unprovoked. They also help control cicada numbers and, incidentally, aerate compacted soil.
Where they do become a genuine nuisance is in numbers, on turf people use. Because females prefer bare, dry, sun-exposed, well-drained soil, dozens can nest in the same favorable patch — a thin lawn, a sand-based bunker, a bare slope, or the edge of a patio. Heavy burrowing can loosen soil and leave a lawn looking pitted.
The most effective response is habitat modification rather than insecticide, because it addresses why they chose the spot:
What not to do: swatting at patrolling males accomplishes nothing and is the most likely way to end up handling a female by accident. Pouring gasoline, bleach, or boiling water into burrows is unsafe, damages soil and turf, and is illegal in many places. Broad lawn insecticide treatments are poorly targeted for a solitary insect that spends most of its life sealed underground.

The eastern cicada killer ranges across the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, from New England and the upper Midwest south through Florida and Texas, and on into Mexico and Central America. Tarantula hawks are the giants of the spider wasp family, reaching two inches, with iridescent blue-black bodies and vivid orange wings. They hunt tarantulas, and they are the exception to the “big wasp, mild sting” rule — their sting ranks at the very top of the Schmidt index. Scoliid wasps are worth knowing because they are the other common cause of “wasps flying low over my lawn.” The blue-winged scoliid cruises in slow figure-eight patterns just above turf in late summer, hunting for beetle grubs to parasitize underground. It is smaller than a cicada killer, black with blue-sheened wings and two yellow spots. It is harmless, and its presence is a hint that you may have a grub problem in the lawn. Velvet ants are not ants at all but wingless female wasps, and they are relevant here because several species are nest parasites of ground-nesting wasps, including cicada killers. A bright red-and-black “cow killer” wandering across an aggregation is hunting for burrows to lay eggs in. Their sting is genuinely painful, and unlike the cicada killer they will use it if handled. Cicada killers also have their own troubles. Besides velvet ants, satellite flies shadow returning females and deposit larvae on the paralyzed cicada, stealing the provision before the wasp larva can use it — one reason a large aggregation does not grow indefinitely.
Do cicada killers reuse the same nest each year? No individual reuses a burrow, but the site is reused. Larvae overwinter where they were laid and emerge from that soil the following summer, so a favorable patch produces wasps year after year until the habitat changes.
Will they sting my dog? Rarely, and only if the dog catches one. A sting to the muzzle or inside the mouth is worth monitoring for swelling, as with any insect sting.
Are they killing my cicadas / my trees? They kill cicadas, which is the point — and it is a net benefit, since cicada egg-laying damages young tree branches. Cicada killers themselves do no plant damage; the adults are nectar feeders and minor pollinators.
Why are there suddenly so many? Aggregations build over several seasons as each generation emerges into soil their mothers chose. A sudden apparent explosion usually means a patch of turf thinned out enough to become attractive, not that a colony grew.
Should I fill in the holes? Filling holes during the season accomplishes little — females simply re-excavate. Improving turf density between seasons is what actually reduces next year’s numbers.
