The passage is so tight that she usually tears off her own wings and antennae getting in — she is on a one-way trip. Inside, she lays her eggs and, in doing so, deposits pollen she carried from the fig where she was born. Her job done, she dies inside the fig.

But she does not stay there as a recognizable insect. The fig produces an enzyme called ficin (also spelled ficain), a powerful protein-digesting enzyme that breaks the wasp’s body down completely. By the time the fig is ripe, the wasp has been fully absorbed into the fruit — there is no wasp carcass to bite into. The tiny crunch in a fig comes from its seeds, not from insects.

  • You do not need fig wasps for these trees to produce a normal, tasty crop.
  • In most of the country, the specific wasp that pollinates Ficus carica is not even present, because it cannot survive cold winters.
  • Only if you are growing a Smyrna-type fig (such as Calimyrna) would pollination be necessary — and those are rarely recommended for home growers outside specific regions of California precisely because they require the wasp.

So if you planted a fig tree and it is fruiting well, you are almost certainly growing a self-sufficient common variety and have nothing to worry about regarding wasps.

Are Fig Wasps Harmful or a Nuisance?

Fig wasps themselves are completely harmless to people, pets, and property. They cannot sting you, they are not interested in your food or trash, and at 1–2 mm they are almost impossible to notice. If your fig tree is a common variety (which it very likely is), you will not encounter fig wasps around it at all.
